About Kaylee

Kaylee is a Ph.D. Candidate in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Ottawa and has been a professional artist since 2013 when she created the account Art from the Boonies. She obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology from Queen’s University in 2015 and then a Master of Science in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa in 2017.

Her research has focused on female pelvic health since 2014, where she worked as a research assistant on a project assessing pelvic morphology using ultrasound imaging in females with and without a pelvic pain condition known as provoked vestibulodynia. In 2015, she began researching the morphological, functional, and clinical aspects of females with stress urinary incontinence—the involuntary leakage of urine during a cough, sneeze, or exertion—and their impact on the effectiveness of pelvic floor physiotherapy as an intervention.

“I am both a researcher and an artist and I am passionate about sharing research and clinical practice through visuals.”

Kaylee has over seven years of experience in illustration and design. Her artistic skills are self-taught and are complimented by her natural eye for colour and design. Kaylee is proficient in many artistic materials, including acrylic paints, charcoal, pastel, and digital art.

Kaylee has been using her artistic skills to illustrate scientific concepts for over five years. These skills have become pivotal to her research career, helping her design engaging presentations, strong visuals for theses, manuscripts, and grant applications, as well as logos for branding research laboratories and conferences. She has developed a passion for helping her colleagues communicate their research through scientific illustration to help bring their research to life.
